The Babinksi reflex is present at birth and integrates by the age of two. When you stroke the baby’s foot, the toes fan out as in the picture above. The occurs because the nerves have not completely myelinated yet. Retention of the Babinksi reflex can cause difficulties with walking (usually walking on the outsides of the feet), coordination, speech production, stability on the feet, and crawling. This retained reflex is commonly seen in children with reading disabilities.
